Tragedy struck in the Orazi area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Saturday afternoon when a gas explosion critically injured about 20 people, including a pregnant woman and four children. The incident occurred near a densely populated area known as ‘Big Tree,’ causing widespread panic and severe burns to residents and passers-by.
The explosion reportedly originated from a gas refilling shop during repairs on a faulty cylinder, triggering multiple explosions as nearby cylinders ignited. The resulting fire engulfed surrounding buildings, forcing occupants to flee for safety. Victims were rushed to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention, with many sustaining life-threatening burns.
A relative of one victim described the devastating impact, lamenting the financial toll of over ₦500,000 spent on treatment. "My sister-in-law and her husband are among the injured. The explosion has caused unimaginable pain and loss for families," he shared.
Eyewitnesses have called on the government for immediate intervention to assist the victims. "Let the government help these people as they begin the year with such a tragic event," a local source pleaded, highlighting the urgent need for support and stricter safety regulations around gas businesses.
