The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is united, period. That's the unequivocal message from Senator Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor. Speaking emphatically at the party’s 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday, Mohammed flat-out dismissed any notions of factions, shadowy coalitions, or lingering internal divisions within the venerable opposition party. He’s pretty confident, and you gotta feel that energy.
Mohammed didn't mince words, reaffirming the PDP’s resolve to remain a formidable force in Nigeria’s often turbulent political landscape. The focus, he insisted, is squarely on delivering good governance and, crucially, restoring public confidence. “This is a miracle of the PDP,” he declared, with a noticeable conviction in his voice, “the party that has history, pedigree, and the human capital to deliver Nigeria.” He went on to suggest that while the party has certainly been "engrossed in controversies and challenges," these weren't actually "created by us, but created for us." Yet, according to him, they’ve been "navigating them successfully, unlike the other parties." It’s an interesting take, placing the blame externally.
He notably lauded the National Working Committee (NWC) for their diligent efforts in resolving internal disagreements and strengthening party unity. There were visible signs of discord in recent weeks, we all saw it, but Mohammed believes those days are over. “The NWC has collapsed all differences and wranglings. They met before this meeting. What you’ve been seeing in terms of press releases and counter-statements has stopped, and you will not see them again,” he promised. That’s a bold statement, and frankly, a welcome one if true.
Mohammed didn't just stop at the NWC; he also made sure to acknowledge the vital role played by the Board of Trustees (BoT), the National Assembly caucuses, and state chapters. Their collective efforts, he noted, have been instrumental in keeping the party united and effective, especially down at the grassroots level where it really counts. “There is no element of wrangling in the state chapters. And that is where our strengths lie. We thank you, our state chairmen, for keeping the party alive, often with limited resources, and ensuring that PDP remains intact and functional,” he observed, appreciating the often-unsung heroes of party organization.
And you know, when it came to recent media reports about defections and internal rifts, Mohammed simply dismissed them as "cosmetic." These narratives, he argued, were designed solely to weaken the PDP’s image, but they’ve clearly failed. “The news of people leaving the party is all cosmetic. They were created to diminish us, but they have failed,” he firmly stated. He also reiterated that there’s absolutely no need for any parallel stakeholders’ meetings or unofficial coalitions; the entire party leadership is now, apparently, aligned with the NWC. “We are all on the same page. No excuse for coalition, no excuse to form any stakeholders’ meeting other than that of the NWC. We are solidly behind the NWC and the governors and will continue to work as the conscience of the party,” he asserted, making it abundantly clear where loyalty should lie.
Finally, Mohammed offered a clear assurance to Nigerians and the party’s teeming supporters: the PDP will remain laser-focused on delivering tangible results and rebuilding essential public trust. “Please be assured that we will not disappoint Nigerians and our teeming supporters. We are committed to our role as the conscience of the party and will continue working together to ensure the PDP succeeds,” he added, capping off a powerful message of unity and resolve.
