Buhari Laid to Rest in Daura Amid Military Honours and Global Tributes

Former President Muhammadu Buhari was buried on Tuesday, July 15, in Daura, Katsina State, amid tears, solemn tributes, and full military honours. The late leader, who died on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness, was interred at his family compound following Islamic burial rites led by the Chief Imam of Daura.

His remains, draped in the Nigerian national colours, arrived at the Katsina airport around 2:07 p.m. and were transported under tight security in a military convoy. President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and several dignitaries accompanied the body. A military honour guard of 96 soldiers and six officers performed a slow march to the hymn “God Be With You Till We Meet Again”, followed by a 21-gun salute.

The funeral drew an array of global and national leaders, including Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, former Nigerian leaders Yemi Osinbajo and Atiku Abubakar, numerous state governors, ministers, and traditional rulers.

A public holiday was declared nationwide in Buhari’s honour. Condolence registers were opened in government offices and diplomatic missions across Nigeria as the nation paid its final respects to a man who shaped its political journey for decades.
