The Nigerian Senate has announced a special plenary session scheduled for Wednesday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, aimed at reflecting on his legacy and contributions to national development following his recent passing.
The decision was confirmed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who said the session would serve as a moment of national remembrance for the late leader’s role in shaping modern Nigeria.
In a related development, the Senate has strongly denied viral social media claims that its Committee on Constitution Review has approved or recommended the creation of new states.
The clarification followed concerns raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) during Tuesday’s plenary, regarding growing misinformation about the alleged approval of new states.
Responding, Senator Akpabio confirmed that while the committee has received over 42 proposals for state creation, none has passed the rigorous constitutional process required for such changes.
“The process of creating a state is very rigorous and has not been completed in any instance. I urge Nigerians not to be misled by unauthorised reports,” Akpabio stated.
He warned communities against mobilizing around non-existent new states, emphasizing that no state has been created or approved by the National Assembly.
The Senate President urged the public to rely solely on official statements from the National Assembly regarding constitutional amendments and related issues.
