Authorities in Brazil have opened an investigation into the mysterious death of a 20-year-old woman who died during a long-distance bus journey with 26 iPhones strapped to her body.
The incident occurred during a trip from Foz do Iguaçu to São Paulo. The woman reportedly began experiencing severe health complications during a scheduled stop at a roadside restaurant in Guarapuava, located in the central region of Paraná State.
Emergency responders from the Mobile Emergency Care Service were called when she complained of breathing difficulties. “She was treated by emergency workers and was awake but struggling to breathe,” officials said. Shortly afterward, she reportedly showed signs of respiratory distress and suffered a seizure.
Despite intense efforts by paramedics who attempted to resuscitate her for 45 minutes, she was declared dead at the scene.
While administering aid, medics noticed abnormal bulges beneath her clothing. Upon inspection, they uncovered 26 iPhones taped directly to her torso. The Military Police were notified, prompting the arrival of forensic and civil investigators.
A sniffer dog checked her belongings but found no traces of narcotics. However, several bottles of alcohol were discovered in her luggage and were seized by the police.
The woman was travelling alone, and her identity has not yet been released. The 26 iPhones have been handed over to the Federal Revenue Service as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Paraná Civil Police confirmed that forensic tests are being conducted to determine the exact cause of death, as the motive behind the suspected smuggling operation remains unknown.
