Lagos Floods Cause Gridlock, Residents Call for Urgent Action

A torrential downpour early Monday caused widespread flash flooding across Lagos, severely impacting roads, submerging homes and shops, and stranding commuters and motorists for hours. Major roads affected include the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ikorodu Road, Lekki, Agege, and parts of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, among others. Many vehicles broke down as drivers struggled to navigate submerged roads.

Residents in low-lying areas such as Ikorodu’s Gberigbe community reported severe home flooding, while others lamented inadequate government response and poor drainage maintenance. Some warned that drainage channels, even after being cleared, are often re-clogged with waste left nearby.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier warned of thunderstorms and possible flash floods in Lagos and other states. NiMet advised caution, including avoiding driving in heavy rain and securing loose objects. The Lagos government urged calm, assuring citizens that the floodwaters would soon recede.

Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab emphasized government preparedness and warned residents in flood-prone areas to consider temporary relocation. He called for responsible waste disposal and discouraged sensational media coverage, explaining that short-term flash floods are normal for coastal cities.

Despite these assurances, residents are demanding more proactive, long-term flood prevention and drainage management.
