National Youth Games: Team Ekiti Clinches Basketball Gold, Shines in Multiple Sports

ASABA, Delta State — Team Ekiti continued its remarkable performance at the ongoing National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba on Thursday, clinching gold in the male basketball event after a nail-biting 19–18 victory over Team Lagos.

The thrilling final, witnessed by a packed crowd, saw both sides display skill, grit, and composure. However, it was Ekiti’s resilience that made the difference as they edged Lagos by the narrowest of margins.

Speaking after the win, State Basketball Coach, Adetayo Awojinrin, commended the players for their dedication.

“I am happy God crowned our efforts with success. Despite the tough matches we faced during the group stage, we managed to defeat Lagos in the final. I am proud of the team and believe this success will inspire them to win more gold medals in the future,” he said.

Other Sporting Highlights

Team Ekiti also made its mark in other categories:

  • Kungfu: Funbi Adedoyin secured a bronze medal in the 48kg female category. State Head Coach, Ronke Raji, praised her resilience against strong opposition.

  • Para Athletics: Suleiman Abdulazeez delivered an impressive outing, winning gold in discus and silver in shot put.

In recognition of outstanding performances, three athletes — Abdulazeez Suleiman (Para Athletics), Precious Ayodele (Ayo Olopon), and Damilola Oni (Cricket) — have been invited to join the National Federation.

Medal Tally

With these latest achievements, Team Ekiti has now amassed eight medals:

  • 🥇 2 Gold

  • 🥈 3 Silver

  • 🥉 3 Bronze

The results further cement Ekiti’s status as one of the top-performing contingents at the Asaba 2025 National Youth Games.
