Benue Assembly Renames State University as Father Adasu University, Makurdi

The Benue State House of Assembly has amended the law renaming Benue State University, Makurdi, to Father Adasu University, Makurdi.

The development, which took place during plenary on Thursday in Makurdi, followed the adoption of the report of the House Standing Committee on Higher Education.

Leading the debate, the Majority Leader, Mr. Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa), argued that the earlier name, Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, was “too long” and needed to be shortened for ease of usage.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the institution, formerly known as Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, was first renamed Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University in December 2024 in honour of the late former governor who established the university.

At Thursday’s sitting, the Assembly also passed bills amending the laws establishing the College of Education, Katsina-Ala, and the College of Education, Oju, upgrading them to degree-awarding institutions.

Presiding, the Speaker of the House, Mr. Alfred Emberga, directed the Clerk, Dr. Bem Mela, to read the bills for the third time, after which he declared them duly passed.
