The Benue State House of Assembly has passed a bill establishing the Benue State College of Nursing Sciences. The bill scaled through its third reading during Thursday’s plenary in Makurdi.
Leading the debate, Chairman of the House Committee on Health, Thomas Dugeri (APC/Kwande West), stressed the importance of the institution and said it had received strong public support. He urged lawmakers to fast-track its passage to enable the school secure the required accreditation.
Speaker Alfred Emberga, who reviewed the bill clause by clause, disclosed that the college would operate campuses in Makurdi, Adikpo, and Otukpa to improve access for students across the state.
He further explained that the provost of the institution must be a qualified nurse with a Master’s Degree in Nursing. The provost will serve a four-year tenure, renewable for another four years subject to performance and institutional needs.
After the third reading by Clerk of the House, Dr. Bem Mela, the speaker declared the bill passed.
