Ijesa-Isu, Ekiti State — The Regent of Ijesa-Isu Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area, Princess Omobolaji Adeniyi, has warned against attempts by some individuals to cause unrest in the community, calling on Governor Biodun Oyebanji to urgently intervene.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday at the Palace of the Obanla of Ijesa-Isu, Adeniyi, flanked by members of the Obanla-in-Council, described recent developments as a deliberate plot by “powerful politicians” to destabilise the town.
She dismissed reports of the purported suspension of the Eleje of Ipole Ileje, High Chief Olusegun Akiti, describing the claim as false and without due process.
“We were surprised to hear a radio announcement last week that High Chief Olusegun Akiti had been suspended indefinitely. I am appealing to all Nigerians and indigenes of Ijesa-Isu Ekiti to disregard such information. Nothing like that happened,” Adeniyi said.
The regent stressed that no chief could be suspended without the laid-down procedures of the Obanla-in-Council, reaffirming Akiti as the legitimate Eleje of Ileje.
Adeniyi urged the state government to act swiftly to prevent the situation from escalating.
“There have been knotty issues in this community even before I was installed as regent. I am appealing to the state government to please come to our aid and call to order those trying to disrupt the peace, unity, and harmony of this town,” she said.
On his part, Chief Akiti, who displayed his official letter of appointment, questioned the legality of the purported suspension and reaffirmed his commitment to peace and development.
“We are peace-loving people, hardworking and committed to the success of our community, local government and state. Members of the community should go about their normal activities, and any harassment by miscreants should be reported immediately to the authorities,” he said.
Security agencies at both local and state levels have been briefed and are monitoring the situation.
