FG denies claims of systematic genocide against Christians

The Federal Government has dismissed reports from some international media claiming that terrorists in Nigeria are carrying out genocide against Christians.

Information Minister Mohammed Idris said the reports are false and only create division. He explained that Nigeria’s security challenges are not about religion, but about criminals who attack anyone that doesn’t agree with their violent way of life. Both Muslims and Christians — and even those with no religion — have been victims.

He also pointed out the progress security agencies have made. Since May 2023, over 13,500 terrorists and criminals have been killed, nearly 10,000 people have been rescued from captivity, and the leadership of the terror group Ansaru has been captured. More than 700 Boko Haram suspects have also been convicted in court.

Idris added that Christianity is not under threat in Nigeria, noting that the current heads of the Armed Forces and Police Force are Christians — a sign that leadership in the country is inclusive.

He reminded the public that Nigeria has even been recognized internationally for promoting interfaith peace, with two Nigerian religious leaders winning the Commonwealth Peace Prize earlier this year.

The minister called on international media and commentators to avoid spreading sensational or divisive claims, and instead support Nigeria’s efforts to end terrorism.
