NAFDAC has just banned 101 medicines and health products in Nigeria.

NAFDAC

The agency announced on Tuesday that these drugs can no longer be made, sold, imported, advertised, or used in the country.

Some popular ones on the list include:

Abacavir (HIV drug)

Amlodipine (for blood pressure)

Valsartan products

Januvia/Janumet (for diabetes)

Norditropin (growth hormone)

Different types of artemether/lumefantrine (malaria drugs)

Some inhalers and eye drops

NAFDAC said the move was necessary because:

Some companies voluntarily withdrew their products,

Others had licensing issues,

And a few had their registration completely revoked.

This comes as the world is battling fake and substandard drugs. According to the World Health Organisation, about 1 in 10 medicines in poorer countries are fake or poor quality.

NAFDAC explained it simply:

Withdrawn: the company pulled it out.

Suspended: the conditions for approval are no longer met.

Cancelled: NAFDAC revoked the license.

The agency says it’s all about protecting Nigerians from unsafe medicines.
