Police in Ebonyi State have arrested three people for allegedly trying to cause chaos during the Student Union Government (SUG) election at Ebonyi State University.
The trouble started while results were being announced, when the suspects reportedly fired gunshots to scatter the crowd. Sadly, a stray bullet hit one student, who was quickly rushed to Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
Police spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the arrests on Tuesday, adding that the suspects are in custody and will face charges once investigations are done.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Adaku Uche-Anya, assured the public that the command is fully committed to keeping the peace and ensuring law and order across Ebonyi.
This is not the first time student elections in Nigeria have turned violent. Back in July, Auchi Polytechnic’s SUG elections ended in chaos, with students jumping fences, gunshots heard in the background, and tear gas filling the air, as seen in viral videos. Some students were even spotted with knives to intimidate voters.
