Ten members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Ughelli South Chapter in Delta State, narrowly escaped death on Sunday evening while returning from the Teachers’ Day celebration in Asaba. Four of them are currently in critical condition at the hospital.
According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred at Akiowhe Community when the bus driver, speeding in the rain, tried to overtake a moving truck.
“The accident could have been avoided if the driver had been more careful,” the witness said. “It was raining heavily, yet he was driving too fast. When he tried to overtake the truck, he lost control and rammed into it from behind. Ten teachers were injured, four seriously — the driver even broke his thigh. It took the effort of villagers and passersby to revive one person who was unconscious.”
The impact left the front of the bus and its engine completely crushed, and rescuers had to break the front door to pull out a passenger trapped in front. “They were very lucky to survive,” the eyewitness added.
Speaking from their hospital beds, two of the survivors thanked God for sparing their lives and expressed appreciation to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his swift response.
