Students protest in Oyo, rally support for Dangote refinery

Some members of the National Association of Oduduwa Students (NAOS), the Coalition of Yoruba Students, and the Yoruba Movement held a peaceful protest on Tuesday in Ibadan, Oyo State, to show support for the Dangote Refinery amid its ongoing dispute with oil unions — PENGASSAN, NUPENG, and the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN).

The protesters gathered at the Iwo Road Roundabout, near the end of the Ibadan–Lagos Expressway, chanting solidarity songs and marching through major streets. They carried placards with messages such as “Don’t Kill Dangote Refinery,” “#StopSabotagingFuelInNigeria,” “#EndPENGASSAN,” and “#DangoteRefineryIsANationalAsset.”

Dressed in matching shirts that read “Don’t Kill Dangote Refinery,” the students said their protest was meant to draw the government’s attention to what they described as a “deliberate effort by certain vested interests” to undermine the operations of the refinery — Nigeria’s largest industrial investment and Africa’s biggest single-train refinery.

Speaking during the rally, Olalere Adetunji, President of the National Association of Oduduwa Students, called on President Bola Tinubu and relevant government agencies to step in immediately.

“We are appealing to the Federal Government to protect the Dangote Refinery and ensure that the actions of labour unions or marketers do not derail Nigeria’s progress toward achieving fuel self-sufficiency,” he said.
