SSANU, NASU to begin protest October 9 over delay in renegotiation agreement

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have announced a one-day nationwide protest scheduled for Thursday over the Federal Government’s failure to address their long-standing demands.

In a joint statement under the Joint Action Committee (JAC), both unions directed all their branches to hold emergency congresses on Wednesday to mobilize members for protest activities. These include peaceful marches on campuses, displaying placards, and holding press briefings to air their grievances.

The decision to take to the streets was reached during a JAC meeting on October 6, following what the unions described as the government’s poor response to several ultimatums previously issued.

Among their key demands are:

Fair distribution of the ₦50 billion Earned Allowances,

Completion of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement,

Payment of two months of outstanding salaries,

Settlement of 25% and 35% salary arrears, and

Remittance of third-party deductions for May and June 2022.

JAC had earlier given the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum on September 15, later extending it by 14 days, which expired on Monday, October 6—without any meaningful progress.

A circular titled “Commencement of Protest Actions” and signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, NASU’s General Secretary, and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU’s National President, instructed all university and inter-university branches to fully participate.

Part of the memo reads:

“Despite extending the ultimatum and holding two meetings with the Joint Consultative Committee inaugurated by the Minister of Education, little progress has been made. Our core demands remain unresolved.”

The circular further directed:

“All NASU and SSANU branches in both federal and state-owned universities must hold a joint congress on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, to prepare for a massive one-day protest on Thursday, October 9, 2025.”

The unions emphasized that full compliance and unity among members are vital for the success of the protest.
