Police vow safer digital space, mobilise public against cyber threats

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF–NCCC) has stepped up its fight against online crime with a one-day Cybercrime Awareness Campaign in Abuja, aimed at promoting digital safety, responsible online behaviour, and stronger public resistance to cyber threats.

The NPF–NCCC, a specialised arm of the Police Force, was set up to tackle the rise in cyber-enabled crimes such as online fraud, identity theft, financial scams, and cyberbullying. The centre works closely with agencies like the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to strengthen the country’s capacity in cybercrime prevention, investigation, and digital forensics.

According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the campaign marked a major step in educating Nigerians on online safety and promoting a secure digital culture.

Speaking at the event, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, represented by Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Sadiq Abubakar, restated the Force’s commitment to protecting Nigerians in the digital space.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to creating a safer digital environment for everyone,” he said.

In his remarks, CP Uche Henry, Director of the NPF–NCCC, appreciated the support of partners and stakeholders in driving national cybersecurity goals. He stressed that tackling cybercrime required collective effort, with citizens playing a vital role by staying alert and informed.

“This campaign is part of our mandate to help citizens become more aware and resilient to online threats. We’ll keep expanding cyber education, improving reporting channels, and enhancing enforcement capacity,” Henry added.

The event drew over 3,000 participants from schools, government agencies, private organisations, and digital platforms. Activities included an awareness walk, distribution of educational materials, and a musical segment designed to make learning about cyber safety engaging and fun.

Hundeyin noted that the campaign reflected the Police Force’s renewed commitment to promoting a culture of cyber vigilance and digital empowerment across Nigeria.

“The campaign once again demonstrates our unwavering commitment to securing Nigeria’s digital landscape and empowering citizens to Stay Smart, Stay Safe online,” he said.

Nigeria, like many developing digital economies, continues to face rising cyber threats. The NCC estimates that the country loses billions of naira annually to cyberattacks, including phishing scams, ransomware, and online financial fraud.

In response, the NPF–NCCC has launched several initiatives, including public awareness drives, inter-agency collaboration, and the training of cyber investigators across state commands — all aimed at building a safer and more resilient digital Nigeria.
