Millie Bright Retires from International Football After Glittering England Career
England and Chelsea defender Millie Bright has announced her retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable career with the Lionesses.
The 32-year-old, who made her England debut in 2016, earned 88 caps and played a key role in the team’s historic UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 victory. She also captained England to the 2023 World Cup final, where they finished runners-up to Spain.
Bright revealed her decision during an episode of her podcast, “Daly Brightness”, which she co-hosts with former England teammate Rachel Daly.
“The reality of the last decade wearing the Three Lions has surpassed even my wildest dreams,” she said. “It’s been beyond special for me, and I wish it could last forever. However, in football, all good things must come to an end, and with that, I have decided to retire from international football.”

Earlier this year, Bright withdrew from England’s Euro 2025 qualifying campaign, citing her inability to give “100 percent mentally or physically.” She later underwent knee surgery and began counselling sessions, calling her decision to step away “by far the best decision I have ever made.”
As captain of Chelsea, Bright remains one of the most respected figures in women’s football — celebrated for her leadership, strength, and consistency on and off the pitch.
