US Embassy warns citizens ahead of #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja

US Embassy Issues Security Alert Ahead of Planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest in Abuja

The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to American citizens living in Nigeria ahead of a planned protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The protest, organized under the banner #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, is expected to draw large crowds to Eagle Square and the Central Business District.

The demonstration was announced by activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, via his X (formerly Twitter) account on October 9. Sowore described the protest as a “historic” and peaceful march toward the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, aimed at demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“We now have a date for the historic #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. It is October 20 at 7 a.m.,” Sowore wrote.

Kanu has been in custody since June 2021, following his controversial extradition from Kenya. He is currently facing terrorism charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In a statement published on its website on Friday, the US Embassy warned that the protest could lead to traffic disruptions, roadblocks, and potential violence. It advised American citizens to avoid the protest areas and limit movement across the city during the demonstration.

“The US Embassy in Abuja informs US citizens that the Free Nnamdi Kanu Now protest has called for peaceful demonstrations on Monday, October 20th, 2025, in Abuja,” the advisory read. “There may be roadblocks, traffic congestion, and confrontations between police and protestors that could turn violent around Eagle Square and the Central Business District.”

The Embassy further recommended that children remain home from school and domestic staff who travel from outside Abuja stay home for safety reasons.

It urged Americans to stay vigilant, avoid large gatherings, and exercise caution if caught near any protests. The advisory also encouraged citizens to monitor local news, keep a low profile, and review their personal security plans.

“Keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency,” the Embassy added.

The alert comes as tension continues to rise around the planned protest, with authorities expected to tighten security across key parts of Abuja on Monday.
