The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Imo State Command, has deployed more than 650 personnel as part of its annual Ember Months safety campaign across the state.

The term “ember months” refers to the last four months of the year — September to December — a period known for increased travel and heightened road traffic as people move for holidays, celebrations, and end-of-year activities.

Speaking during the official flag-off of the 2025 Ember Months Public Sensitisation and Campaign in Owerri on Friday, the Imo Sector Commander, Mr. Udensi Oji, said the deployment includes 350 regular officers and over 300 Special Marshals.

This year’s campaign, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety — Stop Distracted Driving,” focuses on reducing road crashes through public education and behavioural change.

Oji explained that the sensitisation drive aims to highlight the economic, emotional, and health impact of road crashes while promoting compliance with traffic regulations and responsible loading practices.

“The campaign will also promote the importance of road safety, prevent crashes caused by speeding, strengthen collaboration with other agencies, and sensitise road users on how to use the FRSC mobile app to report reckless driving,” he said.

The awareness efforts target a wide range of groups — including commuters, motorcyclists, tricyclists, drivers, roadside traders, transport operators, and community leaders.

Oji added that the command has developed an action plan to ensure smooth traffic flow between December 15, 2025, and January 15, 2026, a period when travel peaks.

He advised drivers to remain fully focused behind the wheel, avoid distractions such as mobile phones and lengthy conversations with passengers, and adhere strictly to speed limits.

Highlighting Imo’s strategic location as a gateway to Abia, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, and Cross River States, Oji said Owerri’s position makes traffic management during festive periods especially challenging.

He urged residents to use the FRSC’s toll-free emergency line when needed, assuring that ambulances and tow trucks will be on standby throughout the campaign to provide quick assistance.
