Police deny attack on residents during Lagos demolition

The Lagos State Police Command has refuted claims circulating on social media that its officers attacked residents during a government demolition exercise in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos.

In a statement released on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, described the reports as false and misleading, accusing those behind them of trying to twist the facts and create public distrust.

Adebisi explained that the demolition was carried out by the appropriate government departments and task force, following due process and legal notification procedures.

“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to set the record straight regarding the misleading reports on social media alleging that armed policemen attacked residents during the government’s demolition exercise in Oworonshoki,” the statement read.

“These reports are completely false and were published with the intent to misinform the public and misrepresent the lawful conduct of police officers deployed to maintain peace during the exercise.”

She clarified that affected residents were given several months of notice and that compensation had already been paid to legitimate occupants before the demolition began.

According to her, the role of police officers at the site was strictly to prevent any breakdown of law and order — not to engage in violence or collaborate with any hoodlums.

“The officers on ground acted with professionalism, restraint, and respect for human rights throughout the operation. At no point did they use force or harass residents as falsely claimed,” Adebisi said.

The command urged members of the public to disregard the viral reports and verify information before sharing, stressing that the police remained committed to transparency and the protection of citizens’ rights.

She also reaffirmed that under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh, the Lagos Command will continue to uphold the law, protect lives and property, and support legitimate government policies that promote peace and development.

The clarification came after several online reports alleged that over 50 armed policemen fired shots and teargas to disperse residents protesting the demolition — claims the police have firmly denied.
