Nicki Minaj Reacts to U.S. Labeling Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’
American rapper Onika Maraj, better known as Nicki Minaj, has reacted to the United States government’s decision to classify Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged religious persecution.
Minaj, in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, said the development made her reflect on the privilege of practising her faith freely in the United States.
“Reading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude,” she wrote. “We live in a country where we can freely worship God. No group should ever be persecuted for practising their religion. We don’t have to share the same beliefs to respect each other.”
The rapper also called for prayers for persecuted Christians around the world, adding, “Many countries are facing this horror, and it’s dangerous to act like we don’t see it. Thank you to the President and his team for taking this seriously. God bless every persecuted Christian. Let’s remember to lift them up in prayer.”
Her comments came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Nigeria had been designated a “country of particular concern” due to what he described as “systematic attacks” on Christians by extremist groups. Trump warned that such violence posed an “existential threat” to Christianity in the region and vowed that the United States “cannot stand by” while it continues.
Nigeria Responds
In response, the Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of all worshippers and tackling violent extremism across the country.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said Nigeria remains committed to promoting religious tolerance and unity despite the challenges posed by extremist elements.

“The Federal Government has noted the recent statement by the United States of America on religious freedom in Nigeria. We remain firm in our resolve to combat violent extremism fuelled by special interests that have caused division and decay across West Africa and the Sahel region,” the statement read.
“We mourn all victims of violent extremism and salute our armed forces for their sacrifices. The Federal Government will continue to defend every citizen, regardless of race, creed, or religion. Like America, Nigeria celebrates diversity, which remains our greatest strength.”
