US lawmaker accuses Nigeria of failing to protect Christians despite military aid

US lawmaker Riley Moore has accused the Nigerian Federal Government of failing to account for the billions of dollars in military support it has received from the United States, saying Christians in the country are still being killed despite the heavy assistance.

Moore, who leads the investigative committee set up by former US President Donald Trump to look into alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, made the comments during an interview on The Dinesh D’Souza Show on Thursday night.

According to him, the killings have continued for years with very little action or response from both Nigerian authorities and the international community.

“My brothers and sisters in Christ are being murdered simply for practising their faith,” he said, expressing frustration over what he described as long-standing silence on the matter.

He warned that if nothing changes, the situation could escalate in ways that would affect not only Nigeria but the world at large.

“If we don’t address this and terrorists gain more ground in Nigeria, the US will eventually have to respond. I would prefer we handle this cooperatively with Nigeria,” he added.

Moore criticised the Nigerian government for failing to prioritise the protection of Christians despite receiving significant military equipment, training, and financial support from the US.

“We’ve provided billions of dollars in security assistance — equipment, training — yet the issue remains unresolved. They are not treating the protection of Christians as a priority,” he said.

He described the crisis as something that has been happening “under the radar” for far too long.

“The tools to solve this problem already exist. The tragedy is that nobody has paid enough attention to it for years,” he said.

Moore also referred to the situation as a “forgotten genocide” and urged both Nigeria and its allies to take urgent steps.

He earlier thanked Trump for what he called strong leadership on the issue, promising to submit a detailed report soon.

Trump, in a recent post on his Truth Social platform, repeated his view that Christians in Nigeria are facing severe persecution.

“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed, and radical extremists are behind it,” Trump said, adding that he had designated Nigeria as “a country of particular concern.”

He warned that the US “cannot stand by” while such killings continue and said Washington could be forced to take stronger action if the situation worsens.

Nigeria’s Federal Government has dismissed the claims, insisting that the country is not witnessing a genocide. Officials argue that the security challenges affect both Christians and Muslims and stress that Nigeria’s constitution protects freedom of religion for all citizens.
