The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Iseyin campus, has announced a two-week suspension of academic activities after a 200-level student was killed by a commercial driver on the Iseyin–Saki Road in Oyo State.

The victim, a student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, was reportedly hit on Friday morning by the yet-to-be-identified driver, who fled the scene immediately. Angry students later set the commercial vehicle on fire in protest.

Confirming the incident on Saturday, the university’s Registrar, Olayinka Balogun, said the institution was deeply saddened by the student’s death.

He said, “The management of LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of a 200-level student of Agricultural Economics, who was fatally hit by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin. This heartbreaking incident has cast a dark cloud over our university community. We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.”

Balogun added that, due to the emotional impact of the tragedy, the university approved a two-week suspension of all academic activities at the Iseyin campus with immediate effect.

“Students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources are to proceed on a two-week break,” he said, noting that academic activities would resume on Monday, November 24, 2025. He also said essential service officers would be notified separately if they were required to be on duty.

He urged students to stay safe, support one another, and honour the memory of their late colleague.

A similar case occurred earlier in January when the Lagos State Government shut down Smiley Kids Montessori School in Sangotedo after a two-year-old girl, Rapheala Ogbodo, died in a swimming pool accident.

Both incidents highlight how schools sometimes suspend operations temporarily following the death of a student while investigations and administrative processes continue.
