ASUU Kano Zone Warns of Impending Strike as Talks With FG Stall

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano Zone, has warned that the country may be heading toward another nationwide strike over what it describes as the Federal Government’s lack of sincerity in ongoing renegotiations.

Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Abdulkadir Muhammad, issued the caution after the union’s zonal meeting in Kano, saying lecturers are rapidly losing confidence in the government’s willingness to address long-standing issues affecting the university system.

He recalled that ASUU suspended its two-week warning strike in October to give room for “meaningful and fruitful engagement,” but instead, government representatives have allegedly adopted delay tactics and misled the public.

According to him, “At the NEC meeting held on November 8 and 9 at Taraba State University, it became clear that the renegotiation process is crawling. Some government officials are undermining the talks and misinforming Nigerians about our engagement.”

Muhammad also accused the government of failing to show genuine commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian academics. He argued that the current proposals are incapable of reversing the massive brain drain in public universities or encouraging foreign-based scholars to return.

He reminded the public that ASUU’s one-month ultimatum to the government is almost over, urging traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, students, parents, and other well-meaning Nigerians to intervene before another total shutdown of universities occurs.

With the warning from the Kano Zone, tensions between ASUU and the Federal Government appear to be rising again—raising fears that millions of students could face fresh disruptions to their academic calendar if negotiations collapse.
