Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the coalition-backed party many have speculated he would align with ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
Atiku confirmed the move on Monday via his X handle, sharing a photo of himself holding his ADC membership card with the caption: “It’s official.”
His defection comes months after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party plagued by long-standing internal divisions. Atiku left the PDP just two weeks after key opposition figures publicly adopted the ADC as their new political platform for the 2027 elections.
Why Atiku Left the PDP
Atiku’s exit from the PDP was first announced by his media aide, Paul Ibe. In a resignation letter dated July 16 and addressed to the PDP Jada 1 Ward Chairman in Adamawa State, Atiku cited deep, irreconcilable differences within the party.

He wrote that the PDP had strayed from its founding ideals, prompting his decision to step away.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter read.
Atiku expressed gratitude for the years of support he enjoyed in the party and wished the PDP leadership success going forward.
“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support,” he concluded.
