The National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will meet on Wednesday to determine the union’s next course of action following the conclusion of renegotiation meetings with the Federal Government’s Yayale Ahmed–led committee.
In a last-minute attempt to prevent another ASUU strike, the government’s renegotiation team resumed talks with the union on Monday. According to a senior ASUU NEC member who spoke anonymously, the discussions began on Monday and are expected to wrap up today (Tuesday).
“The renegotiation meeting started on Monday and will end on Tuesday. After that, NEC will meet and decide our next steps by Wednesday. Everyone will know the outcome then,” the official said.
ASUU’s one-month ultimatum to the Federal Government expired on Saturday, raising tension across public universities as the union continues to warn of a possible full-scale strike. The union accuses the government of failing to address critical issues that have lingered for years.

Among ASUU’s key demands are the review of the 2009 ASUU–FG agreement, payment of outstanding salaries and earned allowances, and the release of revitalisation funds for public universities.
Despite these concerns, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa—currently out of the country—maintains that the government has met most of the union’s demands. Two weeks ago, he told journalists that President Bola Tinubu had directed that no strike must occur in public universities and that negotiations were ongoing.
“We’ve met nearly all their requirements and have returned to the negotiation table. We will resolve this,” Alausa said.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has pledged its support for ASUU, warning that it will stand with the academic union if the government fails to address the unresolved issues.
