Lagos Police Suspend Oregun Egungun Festival, Arrest Suspects Over Threat Posters

The Lagos State Police Command has suspended the Egungun festival scheduled to hold in the Oregun area this Friday and Saturday.

The suspension follows the arrest of several suspects linked to posters and social media posts warning residents to stay indoors during the festival. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the suspects acted under the name “Oje Parapo of Oregun” and distributed handbills that threatened people’s freedom of movement and created fear in the community.

The police described the act as an attempt to cause panic and disturb public order.

In a statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, ordered the immediate halt of the festival scheduled for November 27 and 28, 2025. He warned that the police would not tolerate any cultural activity capable of threatening peace, safety, or public order in Lagos.

The statement also revealed that on November 23, officers in Mafoluku, Oshodi arrested 12 individuals involved in a similar attempt to spread fear using provocative publications. All suspects are currently under investigation and will be charged once inquiries are concluded.

The police command urged residents to go about their daily activities without fear, promising continued protection of lives and property across the state.
