AHF Highlights HIV Burden in Nasarawa, Targets Stronger Awareness and STI Care

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation has disclosed that Nasarawa State currently has an HIV prevalence rate of 2.0%, with an estimated 23,306 people living with HIV who need treatment.

The state coordinator for AHF, Dr. Emmanuel Bichi, revealed this during a sensitisation campaign, roadshow, and health talk in Keffi as part of the activities marking World AIDS Day.

World AIDS Day, celebrated every December 1, focuses on raising awareness, promoting prevention, encouraging testing, and showing support for people affected by HIV/AIDS.

Bichi explained that the ongoing sensitisation efforts are critical to combating HIV in the state and across Nigeria.

He said, “Nasarawa State has a prevalence rate of 2.0 per cent, with an estimated 23,306 people living with HIV requiring treatment. AHF and the state government are working closely to address the various HIV/AIDS challenges.”

The AHF Medical Director, Dr. Emmanuel Nwabueze, added that the foundation is intensifying its campaign to help Nigeria meet the 2030 goal of eliminating HIV/AIDS. He noted that AHF is also focused on improved treatment for sexually transmitted infections and general wellness.

According to him, AHF plans to establish a wellness centre in Nasarawa State, similar to the existing centres in Benue and Abuja, to make STI services more accessible.

He also said the foundation will continue providing free condom education and distribution.
