Senate Deputy President Hails Tinubu’s Swift Action to Thwart Benin Coup

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has praised President Bola Tinubu for promptly approving Nigerian military support to counter the attempted coup in the Benin Republic on Sunday.

The coup attempt saw soldiers under the self-styled Military Committee for Refoundation briefly seize the state-owned television station in Cotonou and announce the removal of President Patrice Talon. The mutineers, led by Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri, claimed to have toppled the government, creating alarm across the region.

However, loyalist forces, backed by a rapid deployment of Nigerian troops, overpowered the plotters and restored order. Barau described Tinubu’s decisive response as a reflection of Nigeria’s longstanding role as a stabilizing force in West Africa.

“I commend President Tinubu for swiftly acceding to Benin’s request for Nigerian military intervention to foil the coup,” the senator said, adding that military rule has no place in the region and democracy must be upheld.

Barau also reaffirmed the ECOWAS Parliament’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, fostering regional integration, and supporting peace-building initiatives across West Africa. He emphasized that the swift suppression of the Benin coup serves as a significant success in safeguarding democracy in the subregion.
