The African Action Congress (AAC) has strongly condemned the December 7, 2025 attacks carried out by gunmen in the Nawfia community of Njikoka LGA and at a church in Lilu, Ihiala LGA of Anambra State. The party described the incidents as unacceptable and called for immediate government intervention.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the AAC State Publicity Secretary, Anyanwu Chinedu, said the Anambra State Government must urgently prioritise security reforms, community engagement, and economic empowerment to tackle the root causes of rising insecurity.
Chinedu urged authorities to act decisively to protect residents and bring the attackers to justice. He noted that recent findings show that criminal groups have expanded their activities across both rural and urban parts of the state.
According to the AAC, insecurity in Anambra has worsened in recent months, with increased cases of kidnapping, banditry, cult clashes, and armed robbery. Communities such as Isseke, Umunze, Ogbunka, Nanka, and Awka have reportedly been living under fear due to recurring violence and kidnappings.
The statement read, “We strongly condemn the recent surge in insecurity in Anambra State. The attacks on innocent civilians, including the incident in Nawfia that left several people dead on December 7, and the attack on a church in Lilu, are unacceptable. We demand urgent action.”
The party also expressed sympathy for the victims and their families, insisting that the state government must take concrete steps to restore peace and public safety.
AAC added that its investigations show that many of the attacks are linked to kidnapping rings that have become emboldened, viewing the crime as a profitable venture due to the large ransoms commonly paid.
Some residents interviewed expressed fears that certain security operatives may be enabling these criminals, as many of the attacks occur without any interruption or resistance.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that four people were killed in the Nawfia attack near the Afor Market Junction. Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga attributed the incident to a rival cult clash, explaining that assailants in a black Lexus SUV opened fire indiscriminately in the area.

In a separate incident, unknown gunmen attacked St. Andrews Anglican Church in Lilu, Ihiala LGA, killing two people—including the priest’s wife—and burning vehicles along with the cleric’s residence.
The AAC concluded by urging the government to protect residents, strengthen security operations, and address the socio-economic conditions that contribute to crime in the state.
