An elderly Islamic cleric, identified as Ladan Zubairu, was brutally killed on Monday morning at Yusuf Garko Mosque in the Maraba Quarters area of Kano.
According to eyewitness accounts, Zubairu had gone to the mosque at dawn to call worshippers to prayer. After making the first call, he sat briefly inside the mosque to recite supplications, as was his routine. It was at this moment that an assailant reportedly entered the mosque armed with a weapon, attacked him, and slit his throat.
The deceased’s son, Isa Kasim, described the incident as sudden and shocking. He said his father had just completed the first call to prayer and was seated when the attacker struck.
Following the killing, residents of the area reportedly pursued the suspect. The assailant was eventually caught by an angry mob and killed. In the aftermath, the suspect’s house was set on fire, triggering panic in the neighbourhood before security operatives arrived to restore order.
Kasim added that after the suspect was killed, members of the community discovered his father’s severed throat wrapped in a nylon bag inside the attacker’s pocket.
