American rapper Nicki Minaj has explained why she chose to publicly address reports of the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, citing her personal connection to the country and concerns over alleged attacks on worshippers.

Minaj made the remarks during a surprise appearance at AmericaFest on Sunday, where she was asked what inspired her to speak out. She said Nigeria is a country she has always loved, noting that her pastor is Nigerian and that she has many Nigerian fans.

According to her, hearing reports of people being kidnapped or attacked while worshipping because of their faith was deeply troubling. She said such stories should spark outrage and made it clear that she would no longer remain silent on the issue.

The rapper also spoke on religious freedom globally, stressing that many people take the right to worship for granted. She urged Christians to remember those around the world who are forced to practise their faith in hiding and to keep them in their prayers.

Minaj recalled reacting to a post by former US President Donald Trump, who claimed that Christianity was facing an existential threat in Nigeria. She said the post made her feel grateful for the freedom to worship enjoyed in the United States and emphasised that no group should ever be persecuted for practising their religion.

At the AmericaFest event, Minaj also praised Trump and Vice President JD Vance, describing them as leaders who understand the concerns of ordinary Americans. She added that Christians also face challenges in the United States, arguing that leadership matters when it comes to protecting religious freedom.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria has consistently rejected claims of a coordinated or systematic persecution of Christians. Authorities maintain that insecurity in the country affects Nigerians of all religious backgrounds and is not driven by any state-backed campaign against a particular faith.
