Two Police Officers Killed in Overnight Explosion Near Moscow

Two Russian police officers were killed in the early hours of Wednesday after an explosion went off in Moscow while they were attempting to stop a suspicious individual, Russia’s Investigative Committee has confirmed.

According to the committee, the blast occurred as the officers approached a suspect standing near their patrol vehicle. An explosive device was reportedly triggered during the encounter, killing both officers on the spot.

Investigators said the area was immediately sealed off as forensic teams moved in to examine the scene. Medical and explosive analyses are ongoing to determine the exact nature of the device and how it was detonated.

Russian television footage showed a heavy police presence at the location, with witnesses saying the explosion happened at about 1:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday night.

The incident took place close to the scene where Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was killed earlier in the week. The senior military officer died on Monday after an explosive device planted under his parked car detonated. Sarvarov had been the head of the Russian General Staff’s training department.

Since Russia launched its military campaign in Ukraine in February 2022, several attacks have targeted Russian military figures and pro-Kremlin officials both within Russia and in occupied parts of Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities have acknowledged responsibility for some of those incidents but have not commented on the latest explosion or the killing of the general.

Investigations into the attack are ongoing.
