IBEDC Warns Customers Against Fake SMS Promising Electricity Bill Refunds

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has issued a public warning to its customers over fraudulent text messages circulating across mobile networks, falsely promising electricity bill refunds.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the company said the scam messages are designed to impersonate IBEDC and lure unsuspecting customers into clicking on malicious links. The messages often appear with the sender ID “IBEDC,” making them look genuine.

According to the company, the SMS claims that customers’ electricity bills have been recalculated and that they are entitled to a refund. IBEDC, however, made it clear that it is not conducting any refund exercise through such messages or third-party websites.

“The attention of IBEDC has been drawn to SMS messages claiming that customers’ utility bills have been recalculated and that a refund is available. We wish to categorically state that IBEDC is not carrying out any refund exercise through that website or any similar link,” the management said.

The company specifically identified the website “www.infodhe.online” as a phishing platform and warned customers not to visit or interact with it.

IBEDC stressed that the messages did not originate from the company and are not connected to any of its official systems or approved communication channels.

To avoid financial losses, customers were advised to ignore and delete such messages immediately and to refrain from clicking any links contained in them.

“Customers should not share their banking details, card information, BVN, OTP, passwords or any personal data with unknown callers or websites claiming to represent IBEDC,” the company warned.

The power distributor also reminded customers that all legitimate transactions—such as electricity purchases, account inquiries and authorised refunds—are carried out only through official platforms, including iRecharge, accredited payment agents and IBEDC business offices.

IBEDC urged the public to report any suspicious messages, calls or websites using its name to its customer care channels without delay.

The company added that it would not be held responsible for any losses resulting from interactions with unauthorised or fraudulent platforms falsely claiming to act on its behalf.

Customers seeking clarification or verification of information were advised to contact IBEDC through its official customer care lines or verified social media pages.
