Senegal Edge Morocco in Dramatic, Controversial AFCON 2025 Final

Senegal were crowned champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday night after a tense 1–0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco in Rabat, in a final overshadowed by controversy, lengthy stoppages and heated confrontations.

The pulsating encounter at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium ended goalless after 90 minutes, but not without drama. Deep into stoppage time, the referee awarded Morocco a penalty following a VAR review, a decision that sparked furious protests from Senegalese players.

The situation quickly descended into chaos as players from both sides surrounded the referee, leading to a prolonged delay. At one point, both teams briefly walked off the pitch before match officials and security personnel intervened to restore order.

Morocco were handed a golden chance to snatch victory when Brahim Díaz stepped up to take the spot kick. However, Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy produced a stunning save, denying Díaz’s audacious Panenka attempt and further inflaming the already charged atmosphere inside the stadium.
