Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday joined protesters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, calling for the compulsory inclusion of real-time electronic transmission of election results in the ongoing Electoral Act amendment.
In a video circulating on social media, Amaechi was seen standing alongside demonstrators as they insisted that lawmakers must adopt their demand without compromise.
The protest is coming amid rising debates over the proposed Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly on whether the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be legally required to transmit election results electronically from polling units in real time.
The demonstration has also gained momentum in recent days, with former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi previously lending his voice to the campaign for electoral transparency.
Protesters, made up of civil society groups, youth organisations and concerned citizens, have insisted that the amendment must clearly include the words βreal-time electronic transmissionβ to prevent any loopholes that could weaken electoral credibility.

The protest attracted public attention after demonstrators arrived with mattresses and pillows, signalling their intention to remain at the National Assembly until their demands are met.
While many Nigerians support making real-time transmission mandatory, some lawmakers have argued that the clause should remain optional due to infrastructural and logistical challenges.
The Senate has also denied reports suggesting it rejected the clause, saying its position has been misrepresented. However, protesters remain firm, insisting that the law must clearly compel INEC to transmit results electronically in real time to prevent manipulation.
