Six Killed as Truck Crashes Into Vehicles, Pedestrians on Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway

Tragedy hit the Old Toll Gate area along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State on Tuesday morning after a truck reportedly lost control and crashed into vehicles and pedestrians, killing six people.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the accident happened around 8:00am.

According to the Ogun Sector Command spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, the truck, which was loaded with vegetable oil, suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control in the busy area.

He said the articulated vehicle rammed into two other vehicles and also hit bystanders.

“Six adults — five males and one female — were confirmed dead, while two adult males sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Odunsi stated.

The injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Ifo General Hospital morgue.

Odunsi also disclosed that the Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Wasiu Lawal, visited the crash scene and ordered the immediate removal of roadside traders around the toll gate to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, urged drivers, especially truck operators, to always carry out proper mechanical checks before travelling.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, also confirmed the crash and said the truck driver allegedly fled the scene.

He identified the vehicles involved as a Mack truck, a Suzuki minibus, and a tricycle, adding that reckless speeding contributed to the accident.

The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that investigations have begun, noting that some victims were rushed to the General Hospital, Ota, where six were later confirmed dead.

The police have extended condolences to the families of the victims as authorities continue to probe the incident.
