Magistrates in Cross River State have suspended their strike following the intervention of the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Akon Ikpeme.

The Chairman of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Cross River chapter, Mr. Godwin Onah, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Calabar.

The magistrates had resumed their industrial action on February 8, citing unresolved welfare concerns and the state government’s failure to fulfil promises made in 2023.

Onah clarified that the strike has only been suspended, not completely called off.

“We took the decision after a long meeting with the Chief Judge,” he said. “We have received assurances through the Chief Judge. We are giving between now and September to address our demands.”

According to him, key among their demands are the provision of official vehicles and accommodation for magistrates across the state.

He explained that constructing houses for magistrates in every local government area may not be feasible, suggesting instead that housing allowances be paid as an interim solution.

The association is also demanding the payment of wardrobe allowances as part of efforts to improve welfare conditions.

Although no formal Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the government, Onah expressed optimism that the Chief Judge’s intervention would lead to meaningful action and lasting resolution of the issues.
