Kano Assembly Begins Impeachment Move Against Deputy Governor Over Allegations of Misconduct

The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam, over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.

The impeachment notice was presented on the floor of the House by the Majority Leader, Lawan Dala, and read by Speaker Ismail Falgore during plenary session on Thursday.

Lawmakers said the action is in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, which allows a state legislature to begin impeachment processes against a deputy governor accused of gross misconduct.

The lawmakers accused Abdulsalam of financial impropriety and misuse of official authority, particularly during his time as commissioner for local government affairs. They argued that abuse of public office to gain undue advantage violates constitutional responsibilities of elected officials.

During the plenary, the Majority Leader stated that the assembly had resolved that the deputy governor should be removed from office if the allegations are proven in accordance with constitutional provisions.

A total of 38 members of the state assembly reportedly signed the impeachment notice. The Speaker has directed that the deputy governor be formally served with the notice as required by law.

The political development comes amid ongoing tensions within Kano State politics following the defection of Governor Abba Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the All Progressives Congress last year. The deputy governor chose not to follow the governor in the defection, a decision that reportedly widened political divisions within the state administration.

Political observers believe the impeachment move may further reshape the state’s political landscape as the process unfolds.
