The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party has announced May 23 as the date for its presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, Ken Asogwa. He explained that the decision forms part of the party’s approved timetable for its primaries, which was adopted during a statutory NEC meeting observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the timetable, the party will submit its membership register to INEC on April 15 in line with provisions of the Electoral Act and electoral guidelines. Primaries for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly are scheduled to hold on May 15.

Asogwa also revealed that the NEC ratified earlier decisions on the conduct of ward, local government, and state congresses set for March 26, March 28, and March 31 respectively, while the party’s national convention has been slated for April 11.

He noted that the council reviewed recent developments within the party, including what it described as an unfortunate invasion of its national secretariat by hoodlums allegedly backed by some internal elements.

Following recommendations from the party’s Peace, Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Salisu Mohammed, the Board of Trustees approved the suspension of some members over alleged anti-party activities and acts of indiscipline.

The NEC also endorsed plans to expand the party’s membership register using both digital and manual registration methods. The move, according to the party, is aimed at improving transparency, strengthening participation, and modernising its database.

In addition, the council approved the appointment of interim leaders to fill vacant positions within the party structure, pending the conduct of substantive congresses.

Members were urged to resolve disputes through internal mechanisms to promote unity and reduce conflicts within the party.

The NEC further expressed confidence in the leadership of Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, along with the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and key labour leaders. It also commended INEC for complying with a recent court ruling affirming the party’s leadership.
