NYSC Reaffirms Comprehensive Insurance Coverage for Corps Members

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, has assured that all corps members are fully covered by a comprehensive insurance package throughout their service year.

Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja during a visit by Voice of Nigeria (VON) Director-General Jibrin Ndace, Nafiu explained that the welfare package includes both life and medical insurance, ensuring a safe and memorable service experience. He highlighted that the scheme also supports cases not covered by standard health insurance.

Citing past interventions, Nafiu noted that ₦28 million was provided to save a pregnant corps member and her unborn child after a spinal cord injury in a road accident. Another corps member received ₦33 million for prosthetic arms following a traffic accident en route to his place of primary assignment.

“Since 2004, every corps member has been covered by comprehensive insurance, including health and life insurance. The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) attends to corps members whenever they fall ill,” he said. “From the moment call-up letters are issued—before they even begin their journey from their parents’ homes—they are already covered by insurance.”

Nafiu urged journalists to avoid spreading unverified reports and always confirm facts with the NYSC before publication. He also emphasized that the scheme’s posting policy prioritizes national needs while ensuring corps members’ safety, noting that they will not be deployed to unsafe areas.

The NYSC DG highlighted corps members’ contributions to national initiatives such as elections, health sensitization campaigns, and census exercises, which have been widely commended locally and internationally.

In his remarks, Ndace congratulated Nafiu on his appointment, praising his leadership style and affirming VON’s commitment to partnering with NYSC on youth-focused programming and content development. He pledged to amplify the activities of corps members and showcase NYSC initiatives to a global audience.
