Gas Explosion Rocks Calabar, NEMA Deploys Emergency Response Team

The National Emergency Management Agency has deployed a response team to Calabar, Cross River State, following a gas explosion that left dozens of people injured in the Edibe-Edibe area of Calabar South Local Government Area.

According to a statement from the agency’s Uyo Operations Office, the incident occurred on Sunday, March 22, 2026. Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion started at a gas station and quickly spread to nearby residential and commercial buildings, sparking panic and raising fears of a wider fire outbreak.

At least 43 people sustained varying degrees of injuries. Of these, 25 victims are currently receiving treatment at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, while 18 others are being treated at the General Hospital after being evacuated by emergency responders.

NEMA said its team is working closely with other agencies, including the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, and the Cross River State Fire Service to manage the situation and support affected residents.

Authorities also credited the swift response of emergency services for helping to contain the fire and prevent further damage.
