Police Deny Shooting at NURTW Secretariat, Arraign Baruwa and Six Others

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has dismissed viral videos alleging that its officers were involved in a shooting at the headquarters of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Garki II, Abuja, describing the claims as false and misleading.

According to the command, its operatives only responded to a distress call and acted to restore order during a violent clash at the union’s secretariat.

Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the incident was reported around 7:00 a.m. on March 23, 2026, when about 300 individuals, armed with cutlasses, bottles, bows, and arrows, stormed the premises and began removing items.

She explained that a response team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Isyaku Sharu, was immediately deployed to the scene. Preliminary findings showed that the group attempted to enforce a court order without the presence of authorised court officials, including sheriffs.

The situation reportedly escalated into violence when other members of the union resisted the move, leading to a clash in which one person sustained severe machete injuries to the neck. The victim was rescued by police and taken to the hospital, alongside others who suffered varying degrees of injuries.

Adeh stated that the suspects have since been arraigned before Magistrates’ Court 1 in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, while calm has been restored in the area.

The command reiterated that its officers did not open fire at any point during the incident, urging the public to disregard the circulating videos and avoid spreading misinformation.
