NURTW Leadership Crisis Deepens as MC Oluomo Reclaims Secretariat

The leadership tussle within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) took another turn on Tuesday as the union’s National President, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, regained control of the national secretariat in Abuja.

In a video shared online, Akinsanya was seen at the secretariat inspecting damaged property after taking possession of the facility, which had earlier been occupied by a rival faction.

The development followed a move by a group led by Tajudeen Baruwa, who had taken over the office on Monday, claiming his actions were backed by valid court rulings.

Speaking after the takeover, Baruwa maintained that his faction acted lawfully and peacefully, insisting they were simply enforcing court judgments in their favour after waiting for about two years.

He added that the union had informed the police ahead of the move and submitted copies of the judgments, but received little support. Baruwa also alleged that one of his members was attacked during the process, though he said the situation was under control and expressed willingness to embrace reconciliation.

However, Akinsanya rejected Baruwa’s claims, describing the incident as a forceful takeover. In a statement, he clarified that he was not a party to the judgment cited and revealed that the ruling had already been appealed, with a stay of execution in place.

He urged members of the union to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that the matter is being handled through legal channels as security agencies monitor the situation.

The ongoing dispute highlights deep divisions within the union, with both factions insisting on legitimacy while legal proceedings continue.
