UN Security Council to Hold Emergency Talks on Iran Strikes Amid Escalating War

The United Nations Security Council is set to hold closed-door consultations on Friday to address ongoing strikes on Iran, following a request by Russia as the Middle East conflict approaches its second month.

According to Russian state media, the request was made over concerns about repeated attacks on civilian infrastructure, including schools and healthcare facilities. Evgeny Uspensky, spokesperson for Russia’s UN envoy, said the consultations were necessary due to the worsening humanitarian situation.

Iran has faced near-daily bombardments since February 28, when US-Israeli strikes triggered the conflict, which has since spread across the region. One of the deadliest incidents occurred on the first day of the war, when a strike hit a school in Minab, killing more than 160 children, according to Iranian authorities.

Preliminary findings from a US military investigation indicated that the attack was caused by a targeting error involving a Tomahawk cruise missile.

The United States, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council, has scheduled the meeting for 10:00 am in New York.

The ongoing military campaign has focused on Iranian leadership, missile installations, and key infrastructure, prompting retaliatory actions from Iran across the Gulf. The situation has also led to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and gas shipments.

In a related development, the UN Human Rights Council will also convene in Geneva on Friday to specifically address the deadly school strike and its implications.
