Tijani Announces AI Surveillance Rollout in Plateau After Deadly Attack

Tijani

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has announced plans to deploy a network of Artificial Intelligence-powered surveillance cameras across Plateau State, starting with the capital, Jos.

The initiative, he said, is aimed at strengthening security in the state and improving response to threats.

Tijani made the disclosure shortly after President Bola Tinubu visited Jos following a Palm Sunday attack that left 28 people dead and several others injured.

In a statement shared on X, the minister reflected on his personal connection to the state, recalling his experience during the 2001 crisis as a student at the University of Jos.

“I was 24, a student at the University of Jos, when the first major attack struck our city. Twenty-five years later, Jos, and indeed Plateau State, is still searching for lasting peace. This is not just a memory for me; it is a responsibility,” he said.

He added that securing lasting peace in Jos remains one of the most important missions for his team.

Speaking in a video from a press briefing alongside state officials, Tijani confirmed that the deployment followed directives from the President.

“We will work with the governor to deepen digital infrastructure, and on top of that, install a network of AI-enabled cameras across the state, starting with Jos. This is not an empty promise. We already have similar systems in places like Lagos and Enugu, and they are working well,” he said.

The minister described the ongoing insecurity as deeply troubling and assured that his ministry would mobilise all necessary resources to support the project.

The planned surveillance system is expected to improve real-time crime detection, speed up security response, and enhance coordination among law enforcement agencies.
