Police Arrest Man for Alleged Murder of Bus Driver in Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Kelechi Wufurum, over the alleged killing of a commercial bus driver, Ifeanyi Abobo, in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area.

The victim, 51, was reportedly lured to the community under the guise of a transport job, unaware of the suspect’s intentions.

Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko, who briefed journalists at the command headquarters in Port Harcourt, said the suspect attacked the driver following a confrontation. According to her, Wufurum struck the victim on the head and later used a cutlass during the struggle. The victim collapsed at the scene, after which the suspect fled with the minibus and later sold it for ₦2.4 million, along with the victim’s phone.

“He hit him on the head, and when the victim tried to resist, he used a cutlass again. The victim collapsed, and he drove off with the vehicle,” she said.

Iringe-Koko added that the Police Special Operations and Intelligence Team launched an investigation after the incident was reported, leading to the arrest of the suspect. Those who bought the stolen vehicle and phone were also apprehended.
