The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Gombe State Command, has inaugurated a newly constructed Agro Rangers base at the Kanawa Forest Reserve in Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area, in a bid to strengthen agricultural security and address farmer–herder conflicts.
The facility, which includes residential accommodation, solar power and a motorised borehole, was built by the Gombe State Government with support from the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes Project.
The Agro Rangers Unit of the NSCDC was established to bridge security gaps in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, with responsibilities ranging from protecting farmlands and forest reserves to mediating disputes and promoting food security.
Speaking at the inauguration, the State Commandant, Jibrin Idris, described the base as a strategic intervention to safeguard agro-allied investments and improve security in agrarian communities.
He said the initiative aligns with directives from the Corps’ leadership to curb illegal activities such as encroachment, logging and clashes between farmers and herders.

According to him, the new base will serve as a forward operating centre, ensuring round-the-clock surveillance and protection for communities around the Kanawa Forest area.
Idris also commended Governor Muhammadu Yahaya for supporting the project and praised the ACRESAL team for its role in strengthening environmental and agricultural resilience in the state.
As part of the initiative, two operational motorcycles were also provided to enhance patrol and rapid response capabilities within the forest reserve and surrounding communities.
He urged residents to work closely with security personnel and embrace peaceful conflict resolution methods, noting that collaboration between communities and law enforcement is key to sustaining peace and protecting livelihoods.
