Liverpool FC missed the opportunity to move closer to securing a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League after settling for a 1-1 draw against Chelsea FC at Anfield on Saturday.
Chelsea came into the match under pressure after losing six straight Premier League games, but managed to fight back and earn a point against the defending champions.
Liverpool made a bright start when Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring with a brilliant strike after being set up by youngster Rio Ngumoha.
However, Chelsea responded before halftime through Enzo Fernandez, whose free-kick slipped past everyone and found the bottom corner, leaving goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili stranded.
The draw means Liverpool remain seven points clear of sixth-placed AFC Bournemouth with three matches left, keeping them in a strong position for Champions League qualification despite another disappointing display.
Chelsea, on the other hand, can no longer mathematically finish in the Premier League top five and remain stuck in ninth position.
Interim manager Calum McFarlane will still take positives from the performance ahead of next weekend’s FA Cup Final against Manchester City FC.
Liverpool were missing several key attacking players, including Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike through injury, while Alexander Isak was only fit enough for the bench.
